Your car’s battery is an important equipment in your car; it is the equipment that supplies your car’s starter with the necessary power for starting the engine. It is also the battery that absorbs all the electric charge produced by your car’s alternator. This absorption is beneficial because the battery re-charges, making it possible to start your car with ease every time. There are however times when your car can fail to start as usual, meaning that there must be something wrong along your car’s electrical system. It is usually important to diagnose the problem before concluding that your car has a dead battery (we Danes call it Hvad gør man ved et dødt batteri). Common problems that will normally cause your car not to start are usually associated with the wiring system, starter, alternator and leaking battery. Any disconnected electrical wires will definitely not transmit electrical signals from the battery to the starter and from the alternator back to batteries for re-charging. A faulty starter will not be able to receive electrical signals from the battery and will therefore not start the car. Likewise, a faulty alternator will automatically fail to produce power necessary for re-charging the battery. In some cases, the battery itself can be faulty. All these problems will require that you jump start your car every time. It is usually important to ascertain the problem with your car’s starting system before you conclude that you have a dead battery. It may be a very simple problem that you can fix even without the help of a mechanic. One way to determine whether the battery is dead or not is to test the battery’s charging system. Remove the battery from the car and using a charger, charge the battery until the charger’s indicator indicates full. Allow the battery some time to “set’ before measuring its voltage with a multimeter. A properly charging battery that retains charge should still indicate a reading of 12.6 volts on the multimeter. A battery that gives a reading below 12.6 volts will usually have a problem of loss of charge. The second way to ascertain the status of your car’s battery is to make use of a Voltmeter. This requires that your car’s engine runs with the battery still attached. A properly charging battery should give you a reading of 14 volts once you attach Voltmeter probes to the terminals. Obtaining a Voltmeter reading below 14 should serve as an indication that there is something wrong with your car’s charging system and not that you have a dead battery. The above two ways should help you in diagnosing what problem it is with your car’s power system. You will in most cases establish such problems as dirty battery terminals, disconnected electrical wires, faulty starter, faulty alternator and faulty battery. While you can get all these faults repaired, repairing a dead problem is usually almost impossible because of internal damages. A dead battery usually calls for replacement. You can prevent this by simply maintaining your car’s battery as required; regular cleaning, topping when necessary and proper handling.
