Number 9 in Hindu Mythology is full of magic. We have 9 stones viz. Diamond, Ruby, Emerald, Pearl, Cats Eye, Yellow Sapphire, Blue Sapphire, Coral and Gomed. We have 9 Planets in Hindu Mythology viz. Venus, Sun, Mercury, Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Ketu and Rahu. The Navratras that millions of Hindus observe to mark the beginning of a Hindu New Year also stretches over 9 days. Talking of number 9, Vastushastra is full of oddities. For example, why should stairs have an uneven number of steps but not an even number? A question like this is impossible to answer except that uneven numbers are auspicious and even numbers are not. If a house has two steps, it becomes a Yama-devta entrance. But 3 is a good number and 5 is even better than 3. 7 and 11 are good numbers associated with Indra devta, but 9 is incomparable. The reason is that number 9 has two qualities which no other number has. Multiply number 9 by any number and an odd thing happens. The answer you get, if added up, will come to 9. For instance, look at this multiplication, 9 x 9 = 81 and 8+1 = 9. Vastushastra was imbibed by India’s Mughal Kings. Emperor Humayun wore clothes of the colour appropriate to the planet of the day. On Sunday’s he wore Yellow, on Monday he wore Green and so on. He organized his government departments on the basis of the four elements: Fire (Armed Forces), Air (Wardrobe, Kitchen and Stable), Water (Canals and Wine Cellar) and Earth (Agriculture, Land and Buildings), each under a minister who had to wear clothes suited to his department. Humayun’s minister-in-charge of the army had to wear Red. Humayun also adhered to a belief in Hindu Mythology that a person should enter with his right foot first. Badauni, a traveler of that time noted that if anybody entered Humayun’s room with his left foot first, he would be sent out and told to re-enter with his right foot first. Ninety percent of Hindu Wedding also takes place from December, 21 to June, 20 when the Sun is in its Northern Axis, known as Uttaranayan. This is considered as an auspicious period. In contrast, this period from June, 21 till Dec, 20 is seen as inauspicious because the Sun is in its Southern Axis. This period is known as Dakshinayan.
