What is myopia? In a normal eye the cornea is like a window curved to bend the light to focus onto the back of the eye called the retina. When the eye is viewing objects at a distance it is relaxed, but when the eye is doing close up work like reading, or working on a computer the muscles in the eye have to squeeze the internal lens bringing focus onto the retina. When too much time is being spent on an object up close this squeezing of muscles bends out the cornea forward elongating the back of the eye. Nearsightedness is usually inherited genetically. The level of nearsightedness is closely related to how much close up work we do with our eyes. Myopia or nearsightedness occurs when the front of the eye is to steep. There are some myopia treatments available. Glasses for brief sightedness have unique contacts that propagate out the lighting before it gets to the cornea, so it moves further back in the eye before it is targeted. Another way to control myopia lies in specially designed contact lenses designed to gently reshape the curvature of the eye, improving vision over time. Lasik surgery is another option. Many people who have suffered with myopia have had much success with this option in controlling their myopia; however Lasik does thin the cornea by the laser treatment changing the shape. For people suffering with high myopia, Lasik may not be an option. There is a certain thickness that needs to be left behind in the cornea in order to provide strength and stability. When the cornea is too thin as it is with people suffering with high myopia, they may not qualify for this type of nearsightedness treatment. If a child's parents are short-sighted the child is more likely to also be short-sighted. Some evidence has shown that children who use their eyes more to look at near objects are most likely to develop myopia; children who already are myopic will increase their level of myopia. Throughout the years research has shown that premature babies are more likely to become myopic. Babies born early and of lower weight have a one and two chance of becoming myopic. The retina stretches to cover the whole back of the eye this can sometimes cause a tear or a hole to appear in the retina. When this occurs water from within the eye can leak behind the retina causing the retina to detach from the back of the eye. Persons suffering with myopia should consult an eye specialist.
