CHATHAM -- Pittsylvania County supervisors are concerned about a 22-percentincrease in the county attorney"s salary while other countyemployees will not see a raise in their pay. However, county officials and other supervisors who support theincrease say it is not a raise since the attorney will have addedduties and county departments will save the county money by nolonger having to outsource their legal services. "It"s not really an increase," Board ofSupervisors Chairman Tim Barber said Tuesday, who favors the salaryincrease. Chatham-Blairs Supervisor Brenda Bowman said the pay hike —from about $75,000 a year to about $91,500 — could hurtmorale among other county employees who haven"t seen anincrease in years.
"I"m concerned with the precedent we"resetting," Bowman said during a finance committee meeting onMay 3. "To me, this is just going to send the wrong message,"she added. Callands-Gretna Supervisor Jerry Hagerman said Tuesday the countyshould not have given anyone a raise in salary and that there werebudget items that needed to be reduced or eliminated. County Attorney Vaden Hunt declined to comment on the matterTuesday night just before the board"s meeting. Barber said departments — including social services and theIndustrial Development Authority — had been paying money formore expensive outside legal services.
But Hunt has been providingservices to county departments this year for free, Barber said. Hunt is taking on more duties on nights and weekends, Barber said.Hunt"s expanded job duties — and his raise — havebeen included in the county"s adopted budget. In another matter, Williams Co., Inc. gave a briefing to thePittsylvania County Board of Supervisors about a proposed 100-mile,24-inch natural gas pipeline expansion — the VirginiaSouthside Project — extending from its Transco mainline inthe county and into Halifax, Charlotte, Mecklenburg counties andending in Brunswick County, according to a press release fromWilliams. The pipeline — expected to be in service in 2015 —would be parallel to the existing Transco pipeline and wouldinclude 10.7 miles of 24-inch pipe in the county.
Dominion Virginia Power needs more natural gas to fuel a new 1,300megawatt, combined cycle natural gas-fired power station inBrunswick County, according to the news release. The Transcopipeline operates a 20-inch diameter pipeline in southern Virginiathat needs to be expanded to provide 250,000 dekatherms of naturalgas per day needed to serve the new power station, according to thenews release. The proposal also includes a new compressor facility inPittsylvania County, which would be powered by natural gas turbinesat 15,400 horsepower.
