05/15/12 -- Granite Hill Estates(GHE), the Kennebec Valley's premiere continuing care retirementcommunity, welcomes Hallowell-based sketch artist and painter,Betty Henderson, as part of its ongoing Art for Life series.Betty's work is exhibited in the lobby of the Maine Lodge, and shewill appear in a Meet the Artist session on Thursday, May 24, at4:00 p.m. Betty began sketching as soon as she could hold a pencil. Aftergetting no art instruction in elementary or high school, she signedup for all the art classes available at the University of Maine atFarmington, graduating with a degree in elementary education. Whenher pupils didn't understand something, she put her sketchingability to work to explain what she wanted them to know. Aftermarrying, she moved to Schoharie, New York, where she took lessonsin oil painting. Years later she enjoyed lessons with an artteacher in Florida who encouraged her and helped her grow. "Timeflies when you are painting, and I love it," says Betty. "Betty's two daughters inherited her artistic inclinations," saidKathy Jorgensen, Granite Hill's executive director, "though one isan accountant, while the other continues to paint. Since moving toGranite Hill, Betty's been a regular at our Thursday Artist inResidence sessions. She still has much of the work she's painted ordrawn.
