Gas Central Heating - UK's Wet System

Home Improvement,Home Repair
Gas Central Heating has been popular in the UK for over a long time. It is also known as a ‘wet system’ because the water is heated using a gas fired boiler. This heated water then provides central heating to your home and is also a provider of hot water. Before looking at how the system works, let's first take a look at the pros of using the system.

Gas has been a popular fuel for years. It is very efficient and is also cheaper than oil. The unit cost of the energy produced using gas is fairly low as compared to oil or other fuels. Scientists have come up with more efficient ways to make the most of the Gas Central Heating system. Standard boilers do not make use of the hot flue gases and are usually wasted. But the latest designs of boilers that condense these gases provide efficiency of about 90% and maybe more.

Gas pipelines are present in all households in the UK while Oil and coal have to be transported. This saves you transportation costs as well as the headache of getting the fuel.

Not only that but since gas is the most commonly used fuel in the UK, maintenance services is easily found and doesn’t cost much. If your boiler faces some problems, a plumber can be arranged easily.

How Does it Work?

The boiler is the main source of the system. It acts as a big fire and is fired by gas, from the local pipelines. When the gas is opened, it enters the boiler and starts it up using an electric ignition system. The heat then heats up cold water in the water pipes near the boiler. This heated water then travels all around the rooms in your house. This warm water travels through Heat radiators installed in the rooms. The radiators take part of the heat from the water and radiates it to the rooms. They consist of highly coiled up copper wires that take up some of the heat from the hot water passing through the pipes near them. The radiators also have valves attached to them. If you turn off the valve, the hot water will not pass through the pipes near the radiator, and you can turn off the heating system in your room. The water cools down a bit hence the boiler has to keep firing to keep the house warm using the Gas Central Heating Method.

The Gas Central Heating System is usually operated manually. But recently thermostats have been used, which allow you to vary the temperature according to your needs. These thermostats turn on the system when the surrounding temperature is low and vice versa. Some people have electronic programmers attached to their Gas Central Heating Systems to automatically switch on and off the boiler at certain times of the day.

The water in the Gas Central Heating system is a merely just a medium to transport heat from the source to where it is required. Sometimes, when the gas isn’t ‘pure’, the Gas Central Heating system may produce Carbon Monoxide which is a poisonous gas.
