NEW YORK -- The Kennedy family was grieving again Thursday afterthe estranged wife of Robert Kennedy Jr. hanged herself at herhome. Mary Richardson Kennedy, 52, an architect known for herphilanthropic and environmental work who also faced drug andalcohol charges in recent years, was found dead Wednesdayafternoon. The Westchester County medical examiner's office said after anautopsy Thursday that Kennedy died of asphyxiation due to hanging.A person familiar with the investigation into her death saidauthorities concluded that her death was a suicide.
The person wasnot authorized to release the information and spoke on condition ofanonymity. Police have declined to answer questions about thecircumstances of her death. Her husband, Robert Kennedy Jr., a prominent environmental lawyerand the son of former Sen. Robert F.
Kennedy, had filed for adivorce in 2010. The two had married in 1994 and had four childrentogether. The divorce case was still pending at the time of herdeath. In the months after the couple's separation became public, MaryKennedy was arrested twice by police officers who suspected her ofdriving while intoxicated.
Her license was suspended once, but adrunken driving charge was dismissed. Last July, a judge dismisseda charge of driving under the influence of prescription drugs,saying she hadn't been aware it could impair her ability to drive. On Thursday morning, people who knew the family left flowers at thefront door. "I think every family has its tragedies.
But this is too much. Youhave to feel for them," said Kim O'Connell, 59, who said she hadmet the couple while working at their health club. "I just thought she was just a lady. I woke up this morning and Iwanted to do something," she said. Both the Richardson and Kennedy sides of the family expressedsadness over her death in public statements that noted her "gentlesoul and generous spirit," her work advocating environmentallyresponsible building designs and her deep love for her children.
The family hasn't commented publicly on why she might have killedherself. Kennedy's family had been intertwined with the Kennedys even beforeher storybook wedding in 1994. She met Robert's sister, KerryKennedy, at boarding school and was a maid of honor at her weddingto Andrew Cuomo, now governor of New York, in 1990. Mary's eldestsister, book editor Nan Richardson, was also involved in humanrights causes with Kerry Kennedy, now divorced from Cuomo. With one of her children battling severe allergies, Mary Kennedyco-founded the Food Allergy Initiative, billed as the world'slargest private source of funding for food allergy research.
