When researching a topic for a non - fiction book, it's always best to start at the highest level and then circle into increasing detail. In other words, get an overview first and then fill it in with the details. Sounds good in theory, but how can you do that? This article will give you 5 easy ways to start your researching: 1. Read a children's book. Children's books are normally very easy to read. They also are very quick for an adult to read. One of the ways they do that is to avoid detail and concentrate on a high level understanding of their topic. This is exactly what you are trying to achieve with your initial research. So one of the easiest ways to start researching is to read a children's book on your subject. 2. Interview an expert in the field. Almost all topics have some type of local expert -- a consultant or university professor. Many will be willing to spend some time with you discussing their second favorite topic. Especially if you are going to mention them in your book! In fact, one of the techniques you can use to write smallish books is to interview an expert, record it and the turn that recording into a book. 3. Interview a high school teacher of the subject. You don't always have to interview an expert. If your subject is taught in the lower grades, a high school teacher may be a great way to start your research. High school teachers are almost always more knowledgeable than they require to teach. They also usually continually upgrade their qualifications and so they are up to date if only at an undergraduate level. However, unlike a university professor, they are comfortable simplifying topics and giving their students an overview of subjects. So they frequently can help and are often an easier source to approach and to understand. 4. A technique which is much slower but still within reason, is to skim an introductory textbook on the subject. Introductory textbooks are generally written at a medium level of detail. Their focus is generally, to give the student an overview of the topic or a first level of understanding. You can take advantage of this by skimming the textbook.
