For the Groom: Overcoming your Pre wedding nerves

Advice,Relationships,Entertainment
Your big day is creeping closer and you find yourself getting more nervous as each day draws to a close. With mixed emotions of love for your fiancée but dread towards your up and coming big day, pre wedding nerves can create confusing feelings that will only fester if not dealt with properly.

It’s understandable and a lot more common than most grooms realize to have some pre wedding nerves. Both men and women experience different degrees of pre wedding jitters, but many feel that they are unable to express their anxiety to anyone.

It’s important to remember that just because you feel some nerves prior to your wedding it doesn’t mean you’ll pull a fast one and ditch your fiancée! Now’s the time to self – reflect and get some advice, and it looks like you’ve come to the right place. Whatever your worry is, this article will help you to face and fight off those pre wedding jitters.

The experience of pre wedding jitters can range from person to person, whether it’s how easily you can identify the cause or what symptoms you are experiencing. Anger, loss of appetite, insomnia, spots, rashes and waves of emotions can be all down to pre wedding nerves.

When identifying what’s bothering you, some grooms already know what’s troubling them; others need a little self – reflection. Once you’ve identified what’s troubling you, you can then go on to solve the problem.

Find a friend you can trust The saying is that women come from Venus and men come from Mars. We both work in completely different ways. Whilst women are more than happy to flock together and babble like a gaggle of geese about their emotions and concerns, men are quite happy to sit in a room together silently whilst watching the football. It’s a known fact that men withdraw their emotions more than women, which can make it even more difficult to talk to someone about their anxieties.

We’re not telling you to burst into tears the next time you are with your friends, but we are advising you to find someone that you value and trust outside of your relationship to give you some support and guidance. By keeping up friendships with other people during your engagement, it won’t feel like you’ve lost out and have completely changed because of marriage.

Bachelor to Married man The transition of going from eligible bachelor to married man can be a difficult one to grasp. You may equate being a bachelor with having the freedom to do what you like, when you like. Marriage on the other hands may feel like the complete opposite, you’re expected to drop your bachelor lifestyle and settle down. This can lead to asking yourself “Am I really ready for marriage?”

But marriage doesn’t mean you have to change your identity. Just because you are engaged, it doesn’t mean you have to stop going to play sports, or meeting up with your friends. Keep your circle of friends open so you can socialize with and without your fiancée. Your fiancée will have her own circle of friends too that she’ll spend time with, so don’t feel too bad about meeting up with your friends. Remember, engagement is a time to slowly move out of the bachelor lifestyle to prepare you for marriage.

Making the speech The anticipation about making your wedding speech can be a difficult thing to overcome or ignore. Public speaking can be an ordeal for anyone, even more so when you think you will fail or make some mistakes. With sweaty palms and the urge to talk quickly, the daunting thought of having to stand up in front of everyone can really make your stomach flip.

Relax, you’re only human. Your guests are going to be friends and family and will all be supporting you. If you really want your speech to be perfect, practise, practise, practise and practise again. Practising in front of people will help to build your confidence. If you do happen to get your words mixed your family and friends won’t be critical, but instead will be understanding and compassionate towards you.

Meeting new people A lot of brides and grooms feel a bit queasy when they think about meeting new friends and having all eyes on them for their big day. Sure everyone likes a bit of attention, but being the centre of attention for an entire day can seem daunting and exhausting. On top of this meeting new people when you are already feeling nervous is not the best combination.

Realistically, will you ever see some of these people again? Probably not, so don’t get too stressed about meeting new people. They have just come to pay their respects towards you and your bride. You probably won’t have much time to talk to them as you’ll be busy with all the wedding festivities.

In terms of being the centre of attention, we can all feel uncomfortable if we feel people are judging us. The reality is that your guests are there to see you, they all love you, want the best for you and are all privileged to see the happy union of two people. Your wedding will only last one day, so why not make it one to remember.

Financial commitments For men, making the choice to get married brings a lot of expectations. Although gender roles are changing within our society, the man is still seen as the primary bread winner. The days of the parents paying for the weddings are now changing, and the bride and groom are taking matters into their own hands. This may put you under a lot of stress when thinking about paying for the wedding, as well as having to support your wife once you do get married.

Many women today have a job and have no qualms about helping you pay for the wedding and providing some of the income for married life. If you’re finding yourself a bit tight on money, budgeting is your answer. For more information on how to budget your wedding effectively, click here to read ‘Create a budget and stick to it’.

Getting on with the in-laws

In-laws are a bit like marmite, you either love them or hate them. If your relationship with your in-laws hasn’t got off to the best of starts, or you’re worried about them interfering within your marriage at a later date, you and about half of the population have the same reason to be nervous.

The fact is sometimes there are no stopping in laws from being nosy, interfering or nagging, it’s how you deal with it that can make your marriage stronger or weaker. Communication is key, so by talking with your partner about how her in-laws are worrying or irritating you can help you both come to a mutual understanding. You should both support each other if it ever comes to confronting your in laws as you are each other’s priorities. But please do tread carefully, we never want to encourage a family fight.

Your wedding day is a day to enjoy, you’ll gain a new beautiful wife who will be there to love, support and cherish you throughout your married life, so it’s not all bad! Whilst some pre wedding jitters are standard and healthy, stronger emotions and gut feelings don’t go away. If you are aware on some level of your relationship not working, or you aren’t ready to make a commitment we strongly advise you to listen to those thoughts and emotions.
