Lapel pins come in many shapes and sizes. They can promote charity organizations, display a person’s accomplishment, show support for a worthy cause, signify membership, indicate military rank or even just be decorative. People seem to have been wearing lapel pins for quite a long time, but where did they come from? Why were they made? What is the history of lapel pins? Lapel pins were first brought to light during the American Civil War. In order to distinguish between different units, soldiers were ordered to wear pins that would stick to their lapels. These pins were specially designed to signify which unit they in. This helped to keep the units and soldiers more organized. In addition to that, sharing a lapel pin from a unit helped promote loyalty and fellowship within the ranks of the military. Like team colors or a country’s flag, those lapel pins were signs that each solider was a part of a family that would stick together through life and death. During World War I, the lapel pin’s intended purpose had changed. The time of being a unit’s signifying mark was over. Lapel pins had become more than simply markers for units. They were now being given out to extraordinary military servicemen for their acts in the field. Lapel pins had become awards, signs of achievement and they were worn with pride by many different men and women. As the years went by, the lapel pin had remained as a symbol of greatness and heroics in the military. They are passed down to the children of those in the military and are treasured as proud family heirlooms. Older military lapel pins are also valued as cultural treasures. Lapel pins are still given as awards in the military to this day and will most likely remain as symbols of national pride and heroics for many years to come. However, those in the military weren’t the only ones who would wear lapel pins. They have also found their way into civilian life. Lapel pins started slowly becoming a part of many different organizations, groups, teams and more. Fraternities, sororities, schools, sports teams, and more all adopted lapel pins as a symbol of membership to their groups. Many groups have also adopted using lapel pins as awards for various achievements in their groups such as becoming MVP in a sports team, becoming a top contributor in a charity group and more. They are also sold or given out to people who wish to show their support for certain awareness groups and charities to spread the word of important issues that need addressing as well as worthy causes that need help. A simple pin can be a beacon of support and help to those in need. In the 1960’s lapel pins were used to spread many different messages about the various causes and protests that were going on during the time. It was a time where the public desperately wanted to be heard on many different issues, so there were many different methods of getting the various messages out. Lapel pins were a great way to do this. What better way to get your message out than wearing your message on your shirt? Eventually, lapel pins also became decorative pins to wear on an everyday basis. There is an unlimited amount of different designs that can be made for lapel pins. As long as you have the right tools and materials, along with a healthy imagination, you could make any lapel pin that you wanted. Lapel pins were made in all different styles and designs including flowers, animals, characters and much more. Many people wear lapel pins made in the style of flags to show loyalty to their nation. In fact, many people in the United States adopted wearing American flag lapel pins after September 11th to not only show their respect for the victims and their families, but to show their loyalty to the United States and signify their unity as a country. Lapel pins have gone from being strictly for military use to being used by civilians and military servicemen alike over the years. Whether they are used as a sign of loyalty to a group or as an award or even as a fashion statement, people still proudly wear lapel pins to this day and they will most likely continue wearing them and making them for many years to come.
