Writing is an odd activity. It can be natural, flow and stream out of you. Or you have to push yourself, think about every word and spend hours on a page or two. Whenever I've been writing, I always try to work out what it is that means I find it so easy to write some days, yet impossible on others. This article is somewhere in-between a list and a description of what I do and what I think you should do, I hope you find some of it useful and can learn and improve your efficiency by understanding what makes you work. 1) The obvious reasons to not work are distractions. I'm supposed to be doing one thing, but if there's something else for me to do I might go off and do that instead. The alternate activity may have no more value than writing, it might just be watching a YouTube video or folding some clothes. But even something that small can stop you from writing. If there's things you need to do apart from write, I'd always advise you do them first, else you'll constantly be distracted. 2) Your situation can have a huge impact on how you work. Simple things like room temperature or even... When you last went to the toilet. If your sitting there with a headache, hung upside-down by your feet over a bed of nails, you'll find it a lot harder to work than sitting at a desk with a chair at the correct height and a mug of coffee (you do like coffee right). 3) Deadlines, like bad situations can often worsen your writing quality. If you're being set deadlines then I suppose there's not a lot you can do - I'm certainly not in the position to lecture you on them. But if you're setting your own pace, ask yourself if it's reasonable or if it's too daunting and actually reducing your productivity by being there. - As with most of these tips, people work in different ways. Some people need to feel like they're on the edge of a deadline to produce their best work, while others will get more done when they feel like they can complete the task at their leisure. 4) Think about what you write on. If you're reading this article, then you'll have access to the internet and thus, a computer. If you're using a typewriter or pen and paper, you may be at a disadvantage to those with a laptop. Similarly, if you're used to writing on a computer, why not try switching back to pen and paper for a day. There will be far less distractions and the novelty might give your writing a jolt. 5) Sometimes you may need the internet for research or communicating with others, but the internet also provides a wealth of distractions. Try to keep your research and internet access separate from your writing time. Try turning off the WiFi on your laptop or unplug the internet cable if you're on a PC, you should find you'll have a lot less else to do without the internet being a click away. If this doesn't stop you from time-wasting, why not create a separate user account for your writing. Only install the basic software that you need. That means no web browser, music player, pictures etc. Just your writing application. It'll reduce the possible distractions, but it's not for everyone. 6) Reviewing what you've accomplished is an important process of writing, if you've not had a good morning, look at what you have done and see if that motivates you to continue through the afternoon. But also, If you really haven't done anything over the last half hour, maybe you should stop. It's better to force yourself to have a break and do something else for a bit than continue the cycle of not be able to write but not do anything else because you know you're supposed to be writing. You're allowed breaks! 7) My final tip is that you need to know when to stop. We're all human (at least I think I only have human followers) and so at some point, enough will be enough. Realising when you need to stop is a skill in itself. For example, I wrote the outline for this article at 12:06 in the morning, when the idea first came to me and my fingers were tingling, the article was just writing itself. But when the initial framework was laid out and I had to go back and add bits in (generally editing and improving the article before posting), I ground to a halt. I was tired and the initial buzz from the idea had gone and I couldn't think of anything. - If you have trouble sleeping, you may have heard of my final, extra bit of advice. When you're going to start writing, write down everything else you need to do or remember in other aspects of your life. That way you can forget then and not need to worry about them while you're writing. world literature research papers
