In the latest automotive news we got information that in India, car buyers shortly will get the option to choose their cars based on mileages. This is a good move and it should help the vehicles to reduce carbon emissions as well as fuel consumption. The plan is to have star categories in future with five-star being the most fuel efficient and one-star the least. Automobile News India confirms that in the cars that shall be in the market within the next ten years, need to drastically cut down on the fuel that they consume. The current rate of consumption of fuel is 6 litres per 100km. BEE plans to bring it down steadily by first achieving 5.1 litres for 100km by 2016 and then by further reducing it to 4.4 litres by 2021. At present, only 9 to 16 per cent of cars available can claim to be energy efficient. Over the last decade, the total number of cars in India has almost tripled, which equals to an additional fuel burden of 25 millions oil equivalent. As per automotive news, cars giving mileage of 14.28 km per litre of fuel are considered as 5-star cars; up to 11km per litre are in 4-star category. Cars having mileage of 9 km per litre fall in 3-star category while the cars giving less than 8.3 km per litre mileage are placed in the 1-star group. As per a BEE Press Releases India, currently only 32 models out of 330 available in India come in the five-star bracket, while 52 others are classified as four-star vehicles. From the basic findings, it has also been found that there are 72, 69 and 105 models in categories 1-star, 2-star and 3-star respectively. However, on the other side of this automotive news is the consistently conservative approach of the Indian car buyer. It is well-known that here buyers across price sections almost always inquire about the fuel efficiency of a car before purchasing. Some experts take the view that this labelling is a gimmick by the auto manufacturers to quote high prices for higher starred cars. Whatever the case, the environment belongs to us and protecting it is our duty. BEE has taken a step forward here and we can only hope for the best.
