Nintendo 3DS XL Upgrade Debut Sales Marginally Satisfying No doubt when Nintendo set a release date for the new 3DS XL upgrade they were hoping for a bit of hype, after all, in this day and age the debuts of electronic gadgets are headline events. However, Nintendo likely did not get the sales figures that they were after as the new 3DS XL upgrade to the popular gaming console is actually getting off to a sluggish start. Just one year and four months after the original model came out, the new 3DS XL upgrade is already here and it seems that the public is not quite ready to trade up, despite promises that it is worth the extra money. Simply put, it seems that most gamers are happy enough with their original 3DS consoles that they are staying put this week instead of heading out to buy the 3DS XL upgrade. While this is a great testament to the work that Nintendo put into the original, it is likely not what the company wants. The economy being down across the US and other nations is also not helping, as most people are probably looking at an upgrade and contemplating just how much it would hurt them to hold onto their old model. However, all of these considerations aside, this is a very key moment for the Nintendo 3DS because the platform is still very young and the performance of its 3DS XL upgrade is likely going to determine if there are any more upgrades out there. 3DS XL Upgrade a> The platform itself has not caught fire the way that Nintendo had hoped it would 15 years ago, when the president of Nintendo promised a glasses-free 3D revolution, and sales were so slow that last summer the company was forced to cut prices on the original 3DS in order to start moving them off the shelves. So, the big question is how did the 3DS XL upgrade end up doing on the sales charts? While the exact hardware numbers are not out yet, it has been reported that the 3DS XL upgrade managed to sell just shy of five figures, which is actually a bit better than it did the first time around. It also outsold the first 3DS model in the first week it was out, despite the dramatic price difference, which is saying something for a growing fan base that was out there looking specifically for the 3DS XL upgrade because normal consumers are much more likely to grab the newly discounted model. Also encouraging was the fact that software sales for the gaming platform also jumped as people’s interest in the 3DS must have been re-energised by all of the news about the 3DS XL upgrade. Sales of software for the Nintendo 3DS jumped up by 11% in the first week of its release, with classic titles such as Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D making giant leaps in sales with increases of 45% and 37% respectively. Also selling well was Mario & Sonic’s London Olympics, which obviously got a bit of a boost from the games staring this past week from the 3DS XL upgrade
