If you want to start a career as a freelance writer, there are more tools available than ever before to help you. But as you may already know, it's not an easy walk if you don't do some research first to help you along the way. A freelance career of any type can be liberating as you have the freedom to make your own schedule. It can also be very shaky as you do not have a guaranteed paycheck and no proof that projects will come in. Being a freelance writer these days can be even harder than it was years ago as everyone wants to get in on the action and most anyone who can speak the language feels like they can write the language. However, this is not always the case and there is a lot more that goes into a freelance writer career than just the ability to write. If you want to start a career as a freelance writer, here are some steps to follow: · Research the industry- find out what other people are currently being paid, what types of jobs are available, what education or experience is needed to find the jobs you seek and other information. It's vital you do all of this research before just jumping out on a limb and wanting to do something that you don't know enough about. · Know what type of writing you want to do- you can always change your mind later or add new types of writing to your resume but to start with, you need to focus on a niche and market yourself in that specialty first. If you try to spread yourself too thin as a Jack or Jill-of-all-trades, it will be harder to stand out in the crowd as an expert of anything. · Build a portfolio- potential clients need to know that you can actually do what you claim to be able to do. This is why you need to build a strong portfolio to do this. As you gain more and more experienced jobs, you can continue to replace the items in your portfolio with even better clips that will reflect better on you. But you always need something to start with aside from just your word. · Seek employment- sometimes you just have to get out there and do it. Follow job boards, apply for writing gigs, spread through word of mouth that you are available for hire and more. Find some jobs and continue to build your experience and portfolio. · Continue learning- as a freelance writer, you never stop learning. It's important that you take the steps needed to always stay updated on what is happening and what you need to stay ahead of the competition and continue to evolve as a writer. When you follow these steps, you can start a career as a freelance writer and find out if it works for you. This is the type of career that often takes a lot of commitment to succeed. You will need to put time into it before you can start to reap the rewards. But if it something you are truly passionate about pursuing, then you can find success with hard work and dedication.
