Getting into the habit of writing can be hard. Hey, just writing can be hard. But did you know that there is a way to make it easier to get into the habit? And did you know that you can use that same technique to make it easier to write? And did you know that it was a simple technique? Have I got your interest? Do you want to know what that technique is? Just make it a routine. Here's the thing; writing can be hard to do. But that's usually because you have a system which isn't working. If you have designed a process that works, it really isn't that difficult. (With one exception). Writing can be reasonably easy if you follow a well designed system. The trick is to follow the system. Of course, most people don't. They'd rather use the system they've always used -- figure it out as you go. You need to break that habit. So how do you do this? First, get a system that works well for the type of writing you do. Personally, I prefer a cognitive based system for writing my books and eBooks. Why? Because it's the best system for that type of writing. (You really should have expected that one!) But for my article marketing and blog articles it's overkill. All I need is an outline. But I prefer writing longer pieces and I try to put value into my writing. So I actually write articles and blogs in series... i.e. one big article that gets broken into multiple smaller articles. Which allows me to justify using a cognitive tool. The point is your writing will determine the best system for you. So select the best writing system for what you are writing. Now you need to create a schedule. Start by listing the times you don't have available. What you're left with is the times you can schedule other things in. Now mark the irregular appointments you've scheduled. What you now have is a set of times that are always available. Now you are going to book some of that time. Try to find a fixed time each day. Say 10 to 12 at night. Or 6 to 7 every morning. Now identify a place that you can go where you won't be disturbed while writing. A spare bedroom might work. By the pool might work. So will a library quiet room or a coffee shop. Now book the time and the place. And do it. Every day, at the same time, you go to the same place and you write in the same way. Now that you've created a routine out of the process, you just have to maintain it for the time it takes to create a habit out of it. In order to do that, you need to start off frequently with fortitude and force. Besides a chance at practicing my alliteration, what's the point of that phrase? To create a habit you need to force yourself to write according to the system. And you need to the fortitude or strength to maintain the appointment you've set. Nothing is to be allowed to intrude on the first 30 to 60 iterations. And finally, it's always easier to create a habit if you start out frequently. Let's say that you will create the habit in 100 iterations (which is reasonable for writing habits). If you do the writing every day, you'll create a habit in 100 days -- roughly three and a half months. On the other hand doing it once a week you'll take almost 3 years. In three months you may be able to avoid disruptions. But doing so for 3 years is highly unlikely. And while a disruption won't break the habit once it is established, doing so during the initial formation of the habit may. writer job
