It is a simple, undeniable fact. Active writing will win the contest over passive writing every time. Writing that is passive can be compared to a great speech given in a monotone. You may have great material, have done hours of research and proofed it to the smallest of punctuation marks, but if it is dull and submissive, it will not ascend to the heights for which you aimed. The use of active verbs and an active voice in the same work will elevate it from prosaic to profound. We are all aware of the sorts of words that are considered passive. They are words that connote being. Think of them as verbs that plod along slowly, but eventually get to their destination. Active words are running verbs. They race towards the finish line, arriving there with enthusiasm and vigor. While most works will contain a bit of both types of verb usage, the ratio should always be higher on the active voice side of the scale. If you read through an article or essay and determine you've erred by using too mush passivity in your work, then it's not too late. It is much easier to take a passive statement and turn it into an active, vibrant one than vice-versa. Let's examine one such statement. The lemon was sour. The sentence tells us what we're discussing, i.e. a lemon and what it tasted like, i.e. sour. Other than that, it does very little. Now, let's re-write it. The lemon's yellow rind, when peeled back, provided a tart and tangy flavor that made the lips pucker. This sentence tells us a great deal more about the lemon and about its flavor. It provides us with ideas and stimulates reactions. That is what an active statement does best. Perhaps it might be better to refer to such statements as "activating" as opposed to "active"? Whatever your writing assignment, it can improved upon by simply altering the tone it takes. Clear your writer's throat and break out of that monotone. Give your writing clever cadence and hit a few high literary high notes that simply cannot be overlooked. You only need to remember that you want to run and not plod from one point to the next. By doing so, you carry your readers along for the ride with you and that ensures they are interacting with your words from the starting line to the finish. thesis writing
