Ultrasonic waves are the sound waves that cannot be heard by a normal human being. Typically, ultrasonic waves will be above 20 kHz. Ultrasonic non-destructive testing is carried out in the range of 100 KHz to 50 MHz. The wavelength is much shorter than the audible sound. This makes the ultrasound reflect over small surfaces like defects in the inside of a material. A device, which has the capability to convert energy into ultrasound, is called as an ultrasonic transducer. An ultrasound transducer can convert electrical energy to mechanical energy in the sound wave form and the other way is possible. The main components of ultrasound transducers are backing, active element and wear plate. Active Element is the first component made up of ferroelectric material, which can convert electrical energy into ultrasonic energy. Electrical energy can be an excitation pulse generated from a flaw detector. Commonly used Ferroelectric material used for this purpose is polarized ceramics. The advantage of polarized ceramics is it can be cut in different ways which results in the production if different wave modes. Other new materials used are piezo polymers and composites. The next element is the backing that is highly extenuative and a material with high density whose function is to control transducer vibration. This is achieved by absorbing the energy that is radiating from the active element on the back face. The transducer wear plate is used to protect the element from the testing environment. If it is a contact transducer, then it is best to have a wear plate, which is durable and corrosion resistant, as this has to withstand the wear and tear. Ultrasonic transducers have a wide variety of applications in medicine and industries. An ultrasonic transducer can be used to make pictures of different parts of the body. In industries, transducers are used in sensors and ultrasonic cleaning devices.
