Alumina is the common name of aluminum oxide (Al2O3). The ability of this material to resist high temperatures and also because of its hardness and ability as good electrical insulator has made it a highly useful material in wide range of applications. It is used in areas such as electronics, automotive, instrumentation, semiconductor, medical, communications, space technology, etc. alumina machining can be done only by diamond grinding methods that can prove to be very expensive. Properties of Alumina Its ability to retain its hardness even in high temperatures and its capacity to provide insulation has made it dear for industrial applications. It is available up to 99.9% in purity and it is the most commonly dealt ceramic in industrial applications. Uses The most natural form of alumina in crystalline form is corundum. When corundum gets gem quality, it is popularly known as rubies and sapphires. Its hardness has made it an industrial abrasive and it is also used in the manufacture of cutting tools. Metallic aluminum reacts to the oxygen in the atmosphere; Due to this a thin layer of alumina gets formed on the surface of the metallic aluminum. There cannot be further oxidation as this will layer will give it protection. We can increase the thickness of this layer through a process called anodizing. Taming with Laser Alumina has found a new tool that can cut and grind it at much cheaper rates. Lasers are used successfully to tame alumina. Formerly ceramic materials were processed by using CO2 laser because of its high absorption qualities. Developments in laser technologies have made it much easier as we can control such parameters like pulse duration, beam quality, size of the spots, pulse energy and pulse frequency of the laser. Alumina machining is also possible as it can replace the expensive diamonds in machine tools. Its hardness has made it poor man’s industrial diamond. It is also used in sand papers in its crystal form. It is also used for grinding and making surfaces smooth. Range of applications of alumina is endless.
