The Computing Technology Industry Association or CompTIA is a non-profit trade association created by five individuals involved with micro computing. It was originally established in 1982 as the Association of Better Computer Dealers or ABCD. They are a global organization headquartered in Illinois and manage multiple professional certifications used in the Information Technology industry. It is beneficial for anyone working in the industry to achieve CompTIA certification to establish expertise and mastery in the field. CompTIA operates their certifications through both Prometric and Pearson VUE testing centers. The certifications available are in four different series to showcase skills from individuals beginning at a basic entry-level up to mastery. The CompTIA basic series covers common issues and topics in information technology that apply to any individual seeking a position involving computers with the Strata IT Fundamentals exam. The basic exam includes an understanding of computer hardware, compatibility, errors, software installation and security risks. The exam includes 70 questions and should be taken by candidates for positions including sales associates, marketing specialist and computer support. It typically acts as a stepping stone to more specialized certifications through CompTIA. The CompTIA specialty series is more specialized and tests on material involving the technical and business knowledge necessary to succeed in niche markets. These exams can be taken on their own or along with other certifications to increase authority on the topics covered. The exams in the specialty series include Cloud Essentials, Green IT, Healthcare IT Technician and IT for Sales. The CompTIA professional series is the largest one. It includes professional certifications that cover the necessary knowledge and skills needed to be successful in a specific IT career. The exams included in the series are CompTIA A+, CompTA CDIA+, CompTIA CTT+, CompTIA Linux+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA PDI+, CompTIA Project+, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Server+ and the CompTIA Storage+. Some certifications in the series are accredited by the American National Standards Institute including the Security +, Network + and A+ certifications. The certifications were previously good for life, but the ANSI changed the standards and anyone earning certification after December 31st, 2010 will have to re-take the exam every three years to ensure that they are staying current on knowledge and skills. The mastery series extends beyond the advanced knowledge needed for CompTIA certification with the CompTIA Professional Series. It tests on the advanced knowledge and practice needed to show expertise in a specific discipline. The certification can be taken individually or in combination with other certifications on the path to a specific career. The Mastery Series includes the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner exam. It tests on advanced-level security knowledge and skills. It requires those taking it to apply critical thinking skills in various situations and circumstances to show mastery. It is a very hands-on certification and has been accredited by the International Organization for Standardization and the American National Standards Institute. CompTIA recommends at least ten years of hands-on experience in IT administration before attempting taking the exam. The process of becoming certified with CompTIA requires selecting an exam, training properly for it and deciding on a location to take the actual exam.
