The music has been scored by the trio of Shankar, Eshaan and Loy with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Karthik Calling Karthik romantic thriller revolves around the life of Karthik, a self-confessed loser. He has issues with his confidence. He is mistreated by his boss and the love of his life, Shonali, doesnt even know of his existence. Down in the dumps, Karthik loses all hope when a chance telephone interaction with someone, who also claims to be Karthik, comes to his rescue. This new person assumes the role of a guide and friend, and helps to turn around his life. Under his guidance, Karthik is also able to get through to his love, Shonali. Directed and written by Vijay Lalwani, the movie encapsulates Karthiks journey from being a loser to a winner against the ordeals of life. Movie Review: Karthik Calling Karthik starts with a good premise but fails to hold onto the start mainly because the lead actors are not able to carry the story. In the beginning we see Karthik (Farhan Akhtar) as a loser who is a failure at work and life. Although he does most of the work at office no one seems to notice or give him credit. Everyone pushes him around including his landlord. He has a crush on Sonali (Deepika Padukone) but she does not even know that he exists. And then one day he gets a call. The voice on the other end is Karthik who starts advising him and suddenly his life changes. He become a winner and gets all that he desires. Including the girl. As his life comes closer to his dreams his mind is coming apart. The problem with Karthik Calling Karthik is the central character, which is too complex to be played by Farhan Akhtar. He may have done a decent job in other urban flicks like Rock On and Luck By Chance but Karthik poses a challenge that he is not able to take on. In the initial part when he is the loser he is very uncomfortable and comes into his own when he becomes the cool dude. The moment he slips back into playing the loser, the audience feels an instant disconnect. The switch between the two Karthiks is not convincing enough. The rest of the cast try their best but fall short. Karthik’s lissome girlfriend played by Deepika Padukone leaves much to be desired. With no friends or family Deepika Padukone’s character isn’t real at all. Ram Kumar pitches in as the boss but only appears fleetingly post interval. Shifali Shah, Karthik’s psychiatrist actually solves the mystery but again her role is short and appears just to explain things to Kartik and the audience. The music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy and background score by Midivial Punditz and Karsh Kale is just average. This is surprising because Farhan’s productions often have one or two good numbers that you remember long after the film is over. The last sequence where Sonali rescues Kartik from himself is too simplistic and filmy. Karthik Calling Karthik film ends with a slow track away from the main characters to a solved Rubik’s cube - a metaphor that the director leaves you with but the answers are still not there.
