Senator Miriam Santiago on Sunday advised members of the Judicialand Bar Council who are interested in the Chief Justice post toinhibit themselves from the selection proceedings once they arenominated. In a radio interview, Santiago said staying in the JBC even ifnominated may worsen the already delicate situation of PresidentBenigno Aquino III on the matter. "All those concerned who may be nominated should inhibit ifthey are part of the JBC," she said in an interview on dzBBradio. "They can either remain part of JBC and decline thenomination, or if you accept the nomination, they must inhibitthemselves from the JBC," she added. Among the JBC members whose names had been floated as possiblereplacements for ousted Chief Justice Renato Corona are JusticeSecretary Leila de Lima and acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio. Other members of the JBC are Sen. Francis Escudero and Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. aschairmen of the Senate and House justice committees; ReginoHermosisima Jr. (retired Supreme Court justice); Jose Mejia(academe representative); Aurora Lagman (private sectorrepresentative); and Maria Milagros Cayosa (Integrated Bar of thePhilippines representative). Santiago particularly noted Carpio had clashed with Corona for thetop post in the high court, and is perceived to be close to Aquino,who pushed for Corona"s impeachment. " 'Yan lang suggestion ko . Specific disadvantages On the other hand, Santiago said that while it is high time thecountry had a female Chief Justice, two such candidates at presentmay have specific disadvantages. She was referring to De Lima and Bureau of Internal RevenueCommissioner Kim Henares, who she said are Cabinet members and areperceived close to President Aquino. Also, she said Aquino himself faces a delicate situation, where ifhe appoints someone close to him, he risks being accused ofdeliberately getting rid of Corona in favor of an ally. In the process, she said, Aquino may also damage the highcourt"s credibility.
