You need to hire a freelance writer. You want to get some copy written for a report, a newsletter or for your website. But you don't want to do it yourself. You don't have the time and you want professional copy written by somebody with experience. You have typed 'freelance writer needed' into Google and been swamped with almost 10 million results. How on Earth do you find the right freelancer? Here are some tips to help you do exactly that. Finding freelance writers First, start your search locally. Freelance writers can work from anywhere, but there can be several advantages to choosing a freelancer that is sited close to your business. For example, if you need a writer to physically work with you or attend key meetings, having a local freelancer is much more convenient. Look out for local listings in Google search results and consult any relevant local business directories to find prospective freelancers. If location is not crucial, then finding a freelancer is easy. There are a number of established websites that are specifically designed to connect clients to relevant freelancers. These include the likes of Freelancewritersearch.com, ifreelance.com, Elance, Peopleperhour.com and Getafreelancer.com. Some freelancers are better than others Once you've found a potential freelance writer, you should browse their portfolio website to see whether they have done any work that is similar to the work you are trying to outsource. You can also read any testimonials to see what previous clients have said about them. The next step is to request a free writing sample tailored to the needs of your project. This will allow you to see whether a freelance writer is a good fit for your business and has the tone/style you are looking for. If a freelancer won't send you a try-before-you-buy sample, then move onto somebody else. They obviously don't want your business badly enough. As previously mentioned, finding a freelancer is the easy part. Finding the RIGHT freelancer is slightly harder. The right freelance writer? If you have found a freelancer that has done the sort of work you need, has good recommendations from previous clients and has sent you a writing sample that fulfills your brief, then that's 90 percent of your search completed. Another thing to consider is whether you have found a freelancer that you can work with successfully. Are they passionate about your project? Have they suggested fresh ideas? Can they hit your deadline? Finally, there's the cost. Freelance writers will either charge by the hour (anything from $25 to $100) or on a per-project basis. Ultimately you get what you pay for. Last tip: make sure that you get the fee agreed at the start of any project and put the brief/commission in writing so that the writer has a clear mandate to approach the work thesis help
