There is no denying it: Machu Picchu is a dream vacation. Located in a fairly exotic foreign country, but one that is welcoming enough for visitors to explore unhindered, more and more international travelers are adding a Peru tour onto their travel itineraries. If you want to walk in the footsteps of the Incas, breathe the fresh air of the cloud forests, and marvel at Machu Picchu itself, you need to start thinking about how to travel to Machu Picchu. The first thing you'll need to do is book your international flights. Deciding where to fly into is easy: Peru only has one international airport, and it is located in its capital seaside city of Lima. Flight prices vary drastically depending on where you're arriving from, so start searching for flights early to find the best bargain. Avoiding major holidays will likely make your flight less expensive. There are also many websites that compare fare costs from various airlines. Once you make it to Peru you have three choices: 1) Fly directly to Cuzco, 2) Spend some time in Lima before heading to Cuzco, or 3) Take a long, windy journey by road to Cuzco. Most people opt for choices one or two. Internal flights in Peru are fairly inexpensive, although some airline do charge additional fees if you're not a Peruvian citizen, so check ahead. When you arrive in Cuzco you'll most likely take a train either directly to Machu Picchu Pueblo (the town closest to the citadel itself) or into the Sacred Valley. There is the option of taking buses into the Sacred Valley and then taking the train the rest of the way to Machu Picchu Pueblo. Either way, you're highly likely to spend some time on the train. If you take the train from Cuzco you'll need to take a taxi to the to the train station, as it is located slightly outside of town. Once you're in Machu Picchu Pueblo, you're almost to your final destination! You now only need to take a short bus journey, about 15 minutes, to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Some people hike up the hill, but as the path is steep and more or less follows the road the buses take, it isn't highly recommended. Of course, you could hike the whole way by taking the Inca Trail from outside of Cuzco. If this is a desire, you'll need to book Inca Trail hiking tickets months in advance, as there are a limited number of spots and they sell out quickly. To enter the ruins, you'll need an entrance ticket and your passport. Tickets must be purchased in advance, and if you want to hike the Huayna Picchu mountain, the postcard famous hill that overlooks the ruins below, you'll need an additional ticket for that as well, which also needs to be purchased in advance.
