Measuring for Curtains

Travel & Tourism
Measuring for curtains is essential in getting the correct fit and ensuring they look their very best when fitted on your hotel. There are a number of things that you need to look out for when getting fitted for curtains – here’s some help.

A metal tape offers the best accuracy for measuring curtains and you should always remember to measure the width of the curtain pole and not the window itself. This pole should be fitted above the window by around 6 inches before you take the measurement. They should be wider than the window by 6-8 inches.

You will most likely want your curtains to gather in the centre when they are closed in order to ensure the light gets blocked out. This means you should allow twice the width of the curtain pole for tape top curtains and add an extra 2.5 inches for track pole measurements. This allows your curtain to keep out light and also allow for better insulation.

Height: The height of the curtains is also undoubtedly important and deciding on the finish you want is up to you. Sill length curtains usually end around 6 inches below the window, this helps prevent light creaking in through the edges. If you are after a floor length curtains, then they should be ½ an inch above the ground to prevent issues with dirt and dust and the curtains dragging along the floor.

Tape top curtains measure the length of the eye of the curtain hook on your track pole. In this case take the tab into consideration and remember to ensure that the curtain pole is positioned at a height that is far enough above the window to allow for the length of the tab to be taken into consideration.

In the case of eyelet curtains, these require a curtain hole so measure this. For those who have radiators below the window, ensure the curtain ends at 3 inches below the curtain to ensure that there is enough room for heat to circulate around the room.

Linings: The lining of the curtains is also important, though most come with poly-cotton lining, but if you wish for a different lining for whatever reason i.e. blackout curtains etc. - then this can also be created. Black out linings are ideal for small children and day time sleepers. This is especially true for hotels as many people may be travelling overseas and require day-time sleep. Thermal linings are another alternative and are perfect for insulation purposes.

Curtain Headings: There are also a number of curtain headings to choose from. The pencil pleat heading is the most common, whereas the pinch pleat and slotted pocket heading as well as the eyelet heading are all practical and decorative headings for curtains. There are also a number of other headings that can be added to your curtains, including tiebacks and, swags and tails – it’s your choice but why not also ask.

Curtains can be hard to measure for, however when you get the right ones, you can delight in the difference they make to your room.
