The American College of Sports Medicine 59th Annual Meeting and 3rdWorld Congress on Exercise is Medicine The annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine washeld from May 29 to June 2 in San Francisco and attracted more than6,000 participants from around the world, including clinicians,academicians, allied health professionals, and others interested insports medicine. The conference highlighted recent advances inexercise science and sports medicine, with presentations focusingon the advancement and integration of scientific research toimprove clinical practice. In one study, Mireille Landry, of the Women's College Hospital inToronto, and colleagues evaluated factors that influence attendanceto cardiac rehabilitation (CR) assessment among men and women oncethey are referred. The investigators found that women were lesslikely to attend their intake assessment (IA) as compared to men. "Improved participation in CR by women can be effected throughcareful evaluation of factors that influence access to care.Addressing transportation issues, even at short distances, at onsetof referral may improve attendance to IA," Landry said. "High ratesof depression and arthritis among both men and women shouldencourage physicians to look at these as specific barriers to CR.Coaching calls from CR program coordinators prior to IA may assistin improving IA uptake and in the management of medical signs andsymptoms (like fatigue and anxiety) that interfere with uptake." Abstract No. 2724 In another study, Erika Deike, Ph.D., of Wayland Baptist Universityin Plainview, Texas, and colleagues examined the effects of fishoil on the pro-inflammatory markers tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β in non-dialysischronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, after eight weeks ofsupplementation. "There were increases in all inflammation markers, yet results fromour study indicate that fish oil did not cause significantdifferences in levels of TNF-α or IL-6 between groups, but wasassociated with a smaller increase in IL-1β in non-dialysisCKD patients," Deike said. "Therefore, fish oil may have helped toeffect a smaller increase in levels of IL-1β But since thisstudy lasted only eight weeks, longer studies might show moreevidence of fish oil benefits." Abstract No. 3166 Alex Fokin, M.D., of the University of Miami/Jackson MemorialHospital, and colleagues found that ultrasound-guidedcorticosteroid injection was a viable treatment option for patientswith athletic pubalgia. "All twelve patients who received ultrasound-guided corticosteroidinjections as their treatment for athletic pubalgia returned totheir pre-injury activity level, including participation in sportssuch as biking, swimming, and running," Fokin noted. Eight of 12 patients reported a perfect Western Ontario andMcMaster Universities Index score (100 percent), a hip/groin painmeasure typically used for osteoarthritis. This indicated thatgroin pain was completely alleviated with one injection andpatients were asymptomatic. "The remaining four patients reported a score of 72.8 percent. Allof them experienced marked improvement in groin pain/discomfort butstill had some residual pain. It is unclear why these four patientsdid not benefit from the injections as much as the other eight.Perhaps their groin pain was multi-factorial and was not entirelydue to athletic pubalgia," Fokin said. "This study shows that,based on objective outcome scores, ultrasound-guided corticosteroidinjection is a viable treatment option for patients with athleticpubalgia. Although our study is somewhat limited (only 12subjects), the results are promising."
