What Is An Introductory Speech? Generally, it is one where a person, subject or product is introduced to an audience. By its definition, an introductory speech plays a very important role in setting the mood for the proceedings that follow. An introductory speech warms up the audience to receive a speaker or a particular subject. It is a curtain raiser and it must make the audience look forward to welcoming the speaker or subject . It must make them eager to hear more. How Do You Write An Introductory Speech? 1.Opening Sentence Make the opening sentence catchy. It is a teaser about the speaker or subject and must be able to grab the attention of the audience. For example, after the usual greetings, you may want to say, "Do you know who is the speaker who has won the 2009 best speaker award in the business category?" Or "Do you know what is the most searched topic on health in the Internet for the past six months? Your first sentence is key. Make an impression and get the attention. Think about it. Be creative. Be imaginative. 2. The Follow-Up Offer the audience some information about the person, subject or product that they may not have heard of. Something like where the speaker has last been, the latest feature that has been added to a product or the most recent development on a subject matter. However, do not drag on. For example, if the main speaker has authored 150 books, do not list them all! Just mention the bestsellers or award winners. 3. Make It Short Before writing an introductory speech, find out what the main speaker is going to talk about or details of a product launch. Do not steal their thunder. Do not write about the details about what is going to follow. You can write or mention a couple of key points but limit it to just the minimum. Enough to tease but not to reveal all. 4. Be Brief An event or function is planned and activities scheduled according to time and flow. When writing an introductory speech, keep this at the centre of your mind. The speech must be kept to between 3-5 minutes. Anything longer and you will have the audience wishing that the person delivering the introduction, disappears! 5. How Does The Speech Sound? Read what you have written. Read it out aloud. Listen to the tone. Think of the audience. Is it appropriate for that particular audience? Is the introductory speech crisp, clear and brief? What can be trimmed? How can words be changed for better impact? Writing an introductory speech is different from delivering it. There are many other factors that determine how it is delivered effectively. In writing the speech, spelling, punctuation, grammar and all the other elements of effective writing must be in good order. Writing determines, to a great extent, how the speech will be delivered.
