Must-Watch Movies about Moving

Business
Moving to Washington DC or New York? Although these are exciting cities and good places to settle down, some people are sobered by the thought of moving elsewhere as the task of shifting an entire household is anything but easy. In fact, the task is extremely tedious and energy-draining. However, if you brush off the anxiety and take inspiration from some of these brilliant moving related movies, then the task will not seem to be excruciatingly difficult.

Here are some of the best films that have put moving from one place to another in an entirely new light:

Karate Kid

Released in 1984, this movie stars Ralph Macchio (Daniel Larusso) as a teenager who has to move from New Jersey to California. He has a tough time making new friends; in fact, he makes enemies with ease! Some karate students beat him up and the handy man at Daniel’s new apartment saves him. Later, he teaches Daniel the techniques of karate, using which he defeats those kids who had roughed him up. He also learns how to paint a fence, wins the local karate tournament, and also hooks up with the girl of his dreams!

Toy Story

The concept of toys coming to life was so much fun. Most important task of Andy’s family preparing for a move was forgotten. The toys belong to Andy and they fight among themselves to be his best friend. At the end, everything is sorted out - the toys become friends and they move to Andy’s new house. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, and several other well-known actors had voiced the characters. This movie is an excellent and enjoyable way to introduce your kids to the idea of moving. They will be able to treat the move in a positive way.

Money Pit

A cautionary measure before the move - check to ensure that your new home is not a "Money Pit" like the Tom Hanks and Shelley Long starrer. This film released in 1986, is about a couple who are looking for a new place and they get a stellar deal for a palatial mansion. Reality bites them hard when after moving in they discover that "the mansion" is in ruins and it will cost them an astronomical amount to fix it up. Problems keep cropping up during the remodeling project and the couple’s relationship is also tested, but the movie results in a happy ending after all.

Moving

Richard Pryor is a mass transit engineer from New Jersey but he is fired from his job, which forces him to look for a job in Boise. He finally tells his family that they have to move and they begin preparations. Issues crop up all the time when he hires ex-cons as movers and a person having a multiple personality disorder to take his car to his new home. As a result, the movers don't show up and he loses his job in Boise. Your move surely can't get worse!

Son in Law

Pauly Shore and Carla Gugino are the stars of this 1993 comedy where Gugino moves from the comfort of her family farm to communal living in a co-ed dorm! The transition from farm life to city life is a huge step for Gugino and she is helped by her resident advisor (Shore). Eventually, Gugino brings Shore home for Thanks giving and shows him her old life at the farm. You can relate to the story as the surroundings in the new city will be unknown and different.

The Beverly Hillbillies

This movie is actually a remake of an epic TV sitcom starring Jim Varney, Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin, Lea Thompson, and many other actors. Varney plays Jed, whose missed shot during hunting penetrates the ground and he discovers that he has struck black gold - oil! He adopts a richie-rich lifestyle and moves to Beverly Hills with his family. From a tiny shack to a huge mansion - the transition is huge! However, they end up staying there and it is their neighbors who do the adjusting.

Footloose

Released in 1984, this movie stars Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, and John Lithgow. Bacon is a city boy who moves to a strict and conservative small town where rock music and dancing are a no-no. He decides to go against the system by playing music and dancing. He organizes a school dance and thus he brings about a change in attitude of the town's residents and his small gang of new friends.

Funny Farm

When Chevy Chase stars in a movie, you can't expect anything which will not be rib-tickling. Chase will not disappoint you! His character in the movie retires to the country to pen the Great American Novel, which was his lifelong dream. Being a successful sports journalist prior to the move, he has problems adjusting to life in the country. Local customs, wildlife, and other distractions frequently come his way. However, he succeeds in adjusting to his new life and he becomes a changed individual at the end. This movie is sure to inspire you and help you to have a positive outlook while moving.

Before moving, make sure that you have these great movies in your collection. If you are looking for Washington DC moving companies or movers in New York, the best place to search for them is online. Searching for moving professionals online will help you to get all the listings for such services in the city.
