MONTREAL The NDP has asked Elections Canada to investigate adonation made to the Conservative Party by a Montreal-areafinancier. Alexandre Boulerice, an MP for the Rosemont-Le Petit Patrie riding,filed the request with the Commissioner of Canada Elections thisweek. Mathieu Ravignat, an NDP MP for the Pontiac riding, raised theissue during question period in Ottawa on Friday. Conservative MPDean Del Mastro replied by saying the Conservative Party "doesnot have access to information about any such donations (to localriding associations.)" The donation involves $5,000 that Michael Chamas, a financier whoonce held high political aspirations of his own, allegedly donatedto Mustaque Sarker, a Conservative candidate in the Pontiac ridingin 2008.
In his letter to the commissioner, Boulerice raisesseveral questions about the donation and whether it violated theCanada Elections Act. Chamas has made headlines in the past, in particular after a photocame to light of him posing with then-foreign affairs ministerMaxime Bernier a few months after Chamas' house was raided on March26, 2008 in connection with an RCMP investigation into a marijuanatrafficking ring. Chamas was never charged with drug trafficking, but investigatorsfound two handguns inside his house. Several charges involving thefirearms were filed following the raid. This occurred while Chamas was involved in a lengthy battle withRevenue Canada over a debt he owed dating back to 2006.
On March 8,2011, the Federal Court of Canada ruled that Chamas owed RevenueCanada more than $1.8 million. His house was seized by thegovernment and sold late last year. Chamas's legal problems continue to pile up. Court records indicatehe stopped showing up for court dates on the firearms chargessometime after January 2011.
According to a letter submitted aspart of the case file, Chamas got involved in a dispute withlawyers who acted as his defence. Three of his lawyers officiallyrequested that they withdraw from the case. And since thensummonses have been issued alleging Chamas, who is believed to bein Dubai, breached the conditions of his release by not informingthe RCMP if he intended to leave the country. He has also beencharged with failing to follow a court order.
