Many people choose to go under the knife for various reasons however there is a stigma attached to plastic surgery which to me seems a bit ignorant. Plastic surgery has evolved rapidly over the past 15 years with techniques becoming more progressive and safer but still cosmetic surgery is a subject that is frowned upon by society. Things are changing and so are perceptions. Many celebrities and public figures have stepped out of the once shameful light in order to advocate the practice of cosmetic surgery. There have also been a growing number of talented plastic surgeons who now excel beyond their predecessors. Most of these predecessors have left a horrible trail of patients suffering from a Frankenstein complex. Would the sensitivity towards plastic surgery enthusiasts be any different if it was not endorsed by celebrities such as Oprah, Bruce Jenner or Victoria Beckham? Yes, excessive cosmetic surgery can leave ones face looking like it was effected by time travel but how can we hold surgeons accountable? Am sure that we have all heard the saying; too much of a good thing is bad. Where do we draw the line when it comes to respecting each other personal choices? I am not a fan of cosmetic surgery but I do believe that we have no reason to judge or even presuppose the reasons behind someone else’s decision to get the work done. There are some very logical reasons why people would want to have plastic surgery done; this is something that became extremely apparent following my 2 week admin assistant internship at a practice in Cape Town, South Africa. It is so easy to assume that plastic surgery only relates to breast augmentation and tummy tucks but during my stay in Cape Town, I was faced with the most heart breaking of stories when I came across a 3 year old baby named Thabo who needed surgery on his cleft lip. A cleft lip is an opening that resides above the upper lip caused by abnormal facial development during the gestation period. Even though it was my first encounter with a child that had a cleft lip, it is recorded that 1 in 700 children are born with it. What makes it worse is that most of the families that birth children with facial disfigurement cannot afford the surgery involved with correct them. Most third world medical systems only cover a few surgeries a year if any at all. A majority of these medical procedures are funded by nonprofit organizations that seem to be fighting a losing battle. This experience definitely solidified by appreciation for the existence of plastic surgery and after doing some research I was able to find a few organizations that provide financial support for various types of cosmetic surgery. We as humans tend to judge things based upon our own understanding and in a world filled with disfigured perceptions; we have to get in touch with our humanity. Financing plastic surgery can be stressful so make sure to investigate all your options, bearing in mind that cosmetic surgery is something that should be well researched before going ahead with the procedure.
