Two Favorite Dishes of Our Marriage

When I met him at the first time, I was 21 year old and he was 6 years older than me, so I thought he was able to take good care of me. In that early spring, we went to go hiking together. To be honest, it was really a feast for our eyes. The green trees, colorful flowers and peculiar limestone were here and there. I stood by him and silently looked at him. At the moment, I thought it was fateful for us to come across and love each other. Later on, we were hungry and he invited me to have lunch. In that shabby but simple restaurant in the suburb, I ordered a dish named “sautéed shredded pork in sweet bean sauce” and told him that that was my favorite. He smiled and said, “It is too salty.” Then he ordered “sweet and sour ribs” and told me his excitement of eating ribs at the first time in his childhood. I smiled too and said, “It is too sweet.” 10 minutes later, both of these two dishes arrived, but he only ate ribs and I ate shredded meat, and then I remembered that he was a southerner and I was a typical northerner. One year later, he carried a bundle of delicate roses and proposed to me. From his eyes I found he was a bit perfunctory in the essential procedure of proposal. For him, it seemed that the proposal was a game instead of serious things, which made me hesitate for a while and thought of our different dietary habits. To be honest, at first my father didn’t agree with me and asked, “How could you live together in the future?” “After all, having meals is only a tiny detail of our daily life. The most important point is that I love him.” I said to my father firmly. Upon hearing that, my father shook his head, looked at me anxiously and said nothing. Then I got married with him joyfully and willingly. After marriage, I cooked for him carefully and gradually forgot my own existence. I learnt to put a little sugar and less sault and drink soup elegantly. But it was strange that he was still fond of eating ribs and went to his mothers’ home to have dinner, while I showed special preference to “sautéed shredded pork in sweet bean sauce”. Besides, both of us often worked overtime and went home late, so we became unfamiliar with each other day after day. In that late autumn, we broke up and decided to get divorced. Then we went to have the last meal together in that familiar restaurant. Unlike in the past, conversely I ordered “sweet and sour ribs” and he ordered “sautéed shredded pork in sweet bean sauce” Booth of us were surprised to find that both of them tasted good as long as we were willing to appreciate them. After that, we learnt to be tolerant and led a happy life.
