New Englanders like to act like winter doesn’t bother them, especially if southerners are nearby. At the same time they’ll quickly correct them if they talk about how wonderful snow is. The honest truth is that except for a few outdoor hobbyists who like to ski in Vermont, winter is pretty miserable. New England is the oldest region of America and, as such, it has some of the worst roads. When snow, sleet, and ice start in a state like Massachusetts the winding, narrow roads make driving hazardous. Even a dense town like Peabody, MA can become a dangerous place to drive. Even if the streets are well plowed, people get trapped inside their houses by driveways filled with snow. Even if you have a four wheel drive off-road truck you may need some form of residential snow plowing. If you’re lucky you have a nice short and flat driveway. If you’re young and fit with a healthy back you might even be able to shovel it. After this past winter, it’s pretty easy to feel confident in your abilities to handle snow. With the exception of “Snowtober” there wasn’t a lot of snow, and it was generally warm enough that anything that fell was gone within a day. Think back to the winter before – remember January of 2011? In Boston there were concerns about where to put all of the plowed snow. In towns across New England people avoided travel when they could and many were functionally trapped in their houses because they couldn’t keep up with snow removal. If nothing else, this prospect shows the importance of residential snow plowing. Now, if you have a very small driveway, you might be able to get away with a snow blower, but if you’re like a lot of New Englanders your driveway is far from flat. Just remember you’re going to have to push that snow blower uphill and control it while doing so. If the cement under the snow is slick you might slip and fall. The need for residential snow plowing isn’t just confined to the small towns like Stow, MA but even the more densely populated Peabody, MA can benefit from having residential snow plowing. Even if it’s something you can easily handle with a shovel, isn’t it worth it to know that if a storm comes in overnight you don’t have to wake up early enough to get dressed to shovel, clear the driveway, shower, change into work clothes, and then leave?
