These can include: Folic acid supplements These can be given to women considering having a baby right through to week 12 of a pregnancy. This can help to prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Vitamin D supplements These are given to pregnant and breastfeeding women and to children aged between six months and five years old. They are also suitable for people over age 65. They should also be given to people who do not get enough exposure to sunlight for instance housebound people or people that cover up their skin for religious reasons. Vitamin D helps to control the amount of calcium and phosphate in our bodies. A lack of this vitamin can cause bones to become weak. Mixed Vitamin supplement A,C and D This is usually given to young children between the ages of six months to five years.
