Castlemartyr is a village which is located 20 minutes from the Irish city of Cork. Steeped in history, the spot is highly popular with tourists. The castle from which the village takes its name was built in 1210 by the Knights Templar who were a famous Christian military group. The land passed between many people and in the Seventeenth Century, Richard Boyle, the first Earle of Cork initiated the build of the famous manor house. The site has now been converted into a large luxury holiday destination and the manor house now lies at the centre of the Castlemartyr resort. The Templar Cross is on site and has been integrated into the Castlemartyr Golf Club coat of arms. The resort has a vast range of activities on offer to holiday goers and has something to appeal to everyone. Children with a love of animals can learn how to help out in the onsite stables. A pony and trap tour around the grounds teaches kids how to steer the ponies. Maybe you and the kids have a keen eye for detail and would enjoy partaking in one of the target and field archery classes. Another activity which may be right up your street could be laser clay shooting. Do you fancy sitting back, relaxing and absorbing the surroundings on a horse and carriage tour of the grounds? Or possibly, if you are feeling a little more active, a leisurely stroll with the resident red and white Irish Setters; Countess and Earl could take your fancy. An early evening game of croquet on Mitchell’s lawn could be just the ticket. A perfect end to the day may involve winding down in the Living room with a good book or a family board game. You may feel you would like to venture further afield to some of the local beaches. There are plenty of cycle routes through fantastic scenery which you could take to get there.
