A garage sale is a great idea to get rid of any unnecessary clutter before you move. It is a pain to move to a new house with loads of junk that will just take up space and cause inconvenience. Organizing a sale will help you to dispose these items and make some extra cash at the same time. However, a garage sale is not as easy as it looks. Here are a few pointers to help you out: - Categorize your items before you announce the sale. Not everything that is cluttering your house might be “saleable”. Blindly putting up every item on sale will not help. Sort out the items that are in good condition and might be of some use to others and then do a re-check.
- Before the day of the sale, ensure that you have enough change like one dollar bills at hand. This will save you time from running to big stores for breaking bills because most people tend to pay with those.
- The layout of the items on sale should be planned with the customers in mind. Items that will cater to slightly older customers should be placed on tables, while the ones for kids should be on the ground. Items for all ages can be placed in the center that can be seen from all sides and attractive, eye-catching ones should be near the road. Use large signs with bold and clear letters.
- Pricing is extremely important in such sales. Don’t put absurd price tags because you are sure no one will buy those when they are coming to a sale for a good bargain.
- Labeling things well will provide an additional boost to sales because people have a tendency to enquire and ask repeatedly about a product and it is pricing even if it is clearly mentioned.
- It is important to adopt a friendly attitude or else people are not likely to spend too much time if you are abrupt and curt. Answer questions and be patient with kids.
- Bargaining is an art and it comes with practice. It is important that you are not too rigid on the first day, but it is also necessary to regulate your flexibility so that you are able to make a profit.
- Last but not the least - under no circumstances, should you use a cash box. It is vital to carry the money on you at all times. A cash box is a tempting target for casual thieves who are masters at distracting with questions and then disappearing with the money. A cheap cloth apron/utility belt from the local hardware store works well.
