Frequent Boiler Faults

Home Business,Home Improvement,Home Repair
Regardless of the expenses and installation, boilers will often experience a fault or complete shut down. A multitude of frequent boiler problems are hard to diagnose and often weird noises, poor heat maintenance, and unreliability are the only signals noticeable to the presence of a fault.

Even within their very early years, boilers were a genuine source of many injuries and property destruction, mainly due their poorly understood engineering principles. The majority of prehistoric problems would occur when the boiler’s thin and brittle shells ruptured and, while the poorly welded seams could open, the problem would quickly lead to a violent eruption of pressurised steam.

A boiler which suffers from a loss of feed water, and is therefore permitted to boil dry, could become extremely dangerous within a matter of seconds. If the boiler is dry, yet the pipes continue to send feed water into the empty boiler, the small cascade of incoming water will instantly boil on contact with the overheated metal shell. This contact will quickly lead to a violent explosion which will be unable to control, even by the boiler’s safety steam valves. The possibility of a drained boiler could increase if a leak (which is larger than the make-up water supply could replace) occurs in the steam supply. Anyone who is looking for quick boiler repair, Brighton is the home to many professional companies whose experience extends the repair of many different boilers, including both gas and electric.

Although the way boilers ultimately work hasn’t changed much, their design has been upgraded significantly over the past few years. Today’s modern boilers often come with a series of mechanisms which are designed to distribute heat and hot water at peak times. Faults with these controls could quickly run up a fuel bill and turn homes uncomfortably hot or cold. One of the primary recommendations is therefore to check the mechanisms on a frequent basis in order to avoid, possibly more dramatic and complicated, faults.

A boiler’s thermostat is the second primary cause of complications. Over time the thermostat will become old and lose its accuracy. This often causes the boiler to misread the temperatures and turn the heating on or off at the wrong times. Thermostats should be checked every few months and be replaced immediately if faulty.

If both the thermostat and mechanisms are working correctly, yet the boiler still performs faulty, there is a possibility that the condensate pipe has frozen or is experiencing a severe blockage. The condensate pipe is the main pipe which carries the condensation from the boiler to the outside drain. If the weather becomes extremely cold and there is a change, the pipe may freeze and cause a blockage. A blockage in the condensate pipe will cause the condensate to ‘back up’ into the boiler and cause a complete shut down. Signs of a faulty condensate pipe may include the boiler display showing a ‘faulty code’, or warning light, as well as strange bubbling and gurgling noises coming from within the boiler or the pipe itself.

A multitude of minor boiler faults could result in large and unmanageable leaks when ignored. Most water leaks will often start out very small, yet they could result in great loss of pressure in a boiler. Small leaks may be difficult to find as they often evaporate quickly, but finding small leaks before they have the time to develop into larger leaks could make a huge difference. A boiler’s pressure level should always be between 1 and 1.5, and must never drop below 0.5 or rise above 2.5. An easy fix to a low pressure level is topping up the filling loop in order to re-pressurise the boiler system.

In the case of experiencing one or more of the complications mentioned above it is strongly recommended to contact a professional to carry out a boiler repair. Brighton has a number of professional providers of boiler replacements, servicing, system updates, and boiler break-down and maintenance covers.
