Route 66: The Most Famous Road in the World?

Automotive

People sing about it, there is the biggest rocking chair in the world on it and there’s even a museum dedicated to barbed wire at the side. We can only be talking about one thing – a journey along America’s famous Route 66. Starting in Chicago and winding its way through the heart of America before ending in Santa Monica, Route 66 really is the original and best road trip.

The road stretches for 2,488 miles from Illinois to California and is also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Mother Road and the Main Street of America. The route was established on November 11, 1926 and was one of the original U.S. highways. It runs through many states including Missouri, Texas and Arizona. Undoubtedly the most famous road in the world, it has been immortalized in television, film and song.

The route has now been bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System but the legendary status of the old road remains. Route 66 epitomizes American history and the spirit of the nation lives on in it. Route 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985. It was decided the road was no longer relevant but try telling that to the huge number of bikers and drivers who take to the road every year in a sort of pilgrimage.

With parts now designated as Historic Route 66, it still boasts all manner of roadside attractions, including tepee-shaped motels, frozen custard stands, Indian curio shops, and reptile farms. Even Scottish comedian Billy Connolly, who had dreamed of cruising down Route 66 since he was a boy in Glasgow, hit the road on his trike to film a television series. The Glaswegian stopped in ghost towns, visited rodeos and saw the biggest crucifix in the world on his travels down Route 66. But as Connolly proved, no trip comes without its perils; he had a nasty accident in which his motor trike ended up on top of him. Connolly was left permanently scarred from the crash during which he broke a rib and gashed his leg.

So if you’re heading off on the trip of a lifetime, remember that slight mishaps can happen, but there is no reason it has to ruin your journey. If, like Connolly, you are unlucky enough to run into a bit of trouble remember that much damage can be successfully fixed. If you have damage to your windshield, you may need a quickwindshield repair without even removing the glass to get you back on the road .

Although it included a crash, Connolly was adamant the trip fulfilled his boyhood dreams and took him to the scene of movies he had seen as a child. The landscape was so familiar because he had seen it on the big screen so many times. Although it is no longer possible to drive the whole of the road uninterrupted, much of the original route remains and with a bit of careful planning, slight alternate routes are possible. In some states the 66 sign even remains.
