Several years ago I began experiencing pain in my mouth. I was not sure what was causing the pain, but after a dental visit I found out it was my wisdom teeth. An Ottawa dentist is able to find problems like this. One of the ways that problems are discovered is through x-rays. All dentist offices are capable of taking x-rays. When they do this, they place small devices in your mouth. They leave the room and turn on a switch. A special machine takes pictures and these pictures are then developed. The dentist places the pictures on a lighted screen or they are visible on a computer screen. These show the Ottawa dentist a lot of information. Dentists can see a lot while inspecting a person's mouth, but the x-rays show much deeper rooted problems. There are many times when a dentist doesn't even spot a cavity on a tooth during an inspection of a person's mouth. After he views the x-rays though, he is able to see the cavity. He will then look back into the person's mouth to see if he can notice anything. X-rays are able to pick up the smallest cavities and this is important. The x-rays can also show the Ottawa dentist information about a person's wisdom teeth. It is very common for wisdom teeth to be impacted. This means that they are there, but they have not come through the gums. A lot of times this is due to the alignment of the teeth. The teeth might not be pointed downwards, but instead they are pointed sideways. These teeth may never come through the gums, and this is what causes pain in the mouth. If the wisdom teeth are impacted, they may be causing pressure on the other teeth in the mouth. If an Ottawa dentist finds this out, he will recommend having the teeth pulled. Some dentists do these services themselves, while others don't. Dentists that do not perform wisdom teeth extraction will refer patients to an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon will decide whether to pull the teeth and how many of the teeth he should pull. Sometimes an oral surgeon will decide to pull all four of the teeth at once. This is often preferred because the person only has to go through this procedure one time. In other situations, he may only do one side of the mouth during a visit. This would then require the person to come back again to have the other side done. Ottawa dentists are great at what they do. They always try to find problems in the teeth at early stages. This is only possible though if people come in for regular visits. Your dentist might tell you to come twice a year. This is the best way to catch problems early on and get them fixed before they turn into major problems. One major problem is when a tooth is covered with decay. If the dentist must remove a good portion of the tooth because of the decay, the dentist may need to put a dental crown on the tooth. This can be very expensive, but it could possibly have been able to be prevented. If the person had not waited so long to have the tooth looked at, the decay would have been much smaller. If this had happened, the dentist could have used a regular filling for the tooth. A filling is a common procedure and it costs a lot less than getting a dental crown.
