On 15th September William Honeyball, the General Manager of the Selborne Hotel, Dunoon and Company Area Manager for Scotland and the North of England will scale one of Glasgow city's best known symbols, the Finnieston Crane situated on Pacific Quay and complete a zip wire crossing over the River Clyde reaching speeds of up to 35mph. The Selborne Hotel is one of the many fantastic Leisureplex Hotels around the UK. It offers a window onto the breathtaking scenery of the Scottish Highlands. But General Manager Honeyball is about to enjoy a very different view of scotland, courtesy of a zip wire and a very large crane. The Finnieston Crane (also known as the Stobcross Crane) is the largest of the hammerhead cranes, of which four remain along the river. The last to be built, it was erected in 1931 especially to load huge locomotives, a major export and Glasgow’s second most important engineering industry. It was built by the Carlisle firm Cowans, Sheldon & Co. At the time it was the largest hammerhead crane in Europe and is still in working order. William says "I’m doing this for a few reasons, but mainly to raise some cash for the Clic Sargent Scotland charity, for children with cancer . A zip wire might sound the easy option, but seeing as I’m scared of heights, the 150 foot climb to the top of the crane may well do me in. !!" If you would like to support William and make a donation simply go to http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/WilliamHoneyball For more information on Clic Sargent go to http://www.clicsargent.org.uk In the run up to William’s climb and glide challenge he will be raffling off a wood carving of an iconic Scottish image, the thistle (pictured) by local artist Andy Maclachlan of Chainsaw Craft based near Benmore Botanic Gardens, a short drive from Dunoon. Closing date for the raffle is 13th September 7pm, when it will be drawn.
