It is very important to have a clean mattress to sleep on for obvious health reasons. Assuming around eight hours of sleep for a regular and healthy adult, it means that the average adult spends one third of his or her time sleeping. So it is really a foregone conclusion that the mattress that is slept on and consists of one third of our time should be clean and devoid of any dirt or unhealthy particles such as food stains, urine or any other repulsive item that we would not like on our beds. Although the recommendation is to hire a professional mattress cleaning company rather than do the chore yourself as the mattress cleaning service will do the job more thoroughly and effectively than you might, as the professional mattress cleaning company is certified and hires professional staff to do the job. The mattress cleaning service does it quickly and completely without causing any damage to your mattress. Nevertheless, if you decide to try it yourself for whatever reason, you would be well served in using a vacuum cleaner to suck off any dust or grime from your mattress as a first step. This removes the majority of the dirt from your mattress which are mostly large particles. The damage is minimized as it stops the dirt or any spilt liquid from spreading further. Caution should be exercised here as excess use of the vacuum can spoil the integrity of the fabric of your mattress. Vacuuming is only the first step. The particles that are not caught by the vacuum are smaller in size and will require that you shampoo your mattress to get them removed. Go to your local supermarket and ask for their recommendations for a good solution to wash your mattress in and make sure that it has a citric acid base as it will catch most of the dirt within the mattress. The next and highly important step is drying that should be accelerated with the use of vacuum and also in direct sunlight to kill bacteria. Try to get it dry as soon as possible to avoid reacquainting the mattress with bacteria. We would still recommend that you use professional mattress cleaning to do the job for you as they are trained in this line of work.
