You will need two wooden ladders, four to six pine boards and four three-inch L-brackets. Opt for native wood ladders, which are both functional as well as eco-friendly. The height of the ladders will depend on the elevation of your dorm room or closet. Most dorm rooms will be able to comfortably incorporate six to eight foot tall ladders. There should be a half-inch gap between the top of the ladder and the dorm or closet ceiling. If you are not able to find ladders of the exact height you need, cut two larger ones to length. Mark out the spots for your dorm storage shelf on the floor, leaving a suitable gap between the two ladders for the pine board shelves. Use pieces of tape to mark off where each of the four legs will stand. Attach an L-bracket to the top of each of the four ladder rails. Position the ladders vertically and use a piece of chalk to mark the places where the L-brackets touch the ceiling. Take care to use a spirit level to make sure that the ladders are absolutely straight before marking your positions. Use a cordless drill with a spade drill-head to bore holes in the ceiling at these points. Use a three-inch molly bolt to fix each L-bracket to its corresponding ceiling hole. Tighten the molly bolts until the two ladders are securely in place. Slide in the pine boards so that they are snugly balanced between matching rungs on each of the two ladders.
