A study was conducted on patients with schizophrenia, and it indicated that these individuals suffer from sleep disruptions and have abnormal body clocks that have different patterns in relation to day and night. Researchers who conducted the study believe that it is important to fix these long-term problems along with other symptoms of this disease because lack of sleep greatly affects one's mood, quality of life, mental abilities, and social function. So those suffering from this condition must also be helped by sleep specialists. In the study, the patients suffering from this disease had major disruptions in their sleep even if they had a stable mood and were taking medication regularly. The study also indicated that those with schizophrenia took a longer time to fall asleep, stayed longer in bed, were asleep for a longer time period, and also had variable sleep patterns as compared to healthy unemployed individuals. Researchers have shown strong evidence with the connection between this disease along with various disrupted sleep patterns in those individuals; however, they were not able to show a causal connection between the two. This mental disorder can bring about various symptoms such as delusions, changes in behavior, mixed up thinking, and hallucinations. The cause of this condition is not known, but it is believed to be due to a mixture of environmental and genetic factors. Around one out of one hundred individuals are said to go through this disease. Sleep problems have been a common effect in a lot of the mental diseases, including schizophrenia. However, it is only now that hard evidence has surfaced showing that indeed insomnia is a cause of these mental conditions. A lot of patients usually complain that they are so exhausted making it difficult for them to work and concentrate. Treating their problems with sleep will certainly make their situation a lot better for them. Some doctors have also noticed that many patients who have trouble sleeping run around all night and end up missing their scheduled morning consultations. It has been confirmed that patients are basically going through constant jetlag with how their body clocks are not in tune with night and day. This situation certainly opens up plenty of new paths for new research to understand the connection with mental health conditions and sleep problems. Either way, it is quite clear that there is a relation between psychiatric illnesses and one's body clock. Treating problems with sleep will certainly help improve many patients' lives.
