Recently my wife attended a bridal shower at my cousin's house. I wondered at first why the bridal shower was held at my cousin's house. We were in a big city at the time, and I am sure that there were plenty of other venues that could have served the purposes of a bridal shower. Nonetheless, the bridal shower took place at someone's house. When my wife came home raving about my cousin's vinyl pergolas the choice of venue suddenly made sense. A pergola is usually a square shaped structure. Smaller pergolas will have a support in each corner with a flat roof of latticework. Such pergolas typically graced grape orchards during the middle ages. They marked an entrance to the orchard or simply served as a place to enjoy some wine. These pergolas could be rather large. The columns supporting the roof could be made of either wooden beams, rock, or both. The roofs were made from large wooden beams stretching between the columns and supporting the latticework. Some of these pergolas also served as a support for vines. The columns and lattice work gave vines something to climb, and the resulting roof of foliage provided more shade for those sitting under the pergola. Because of their long history and their association with grape orchards, pergolas carry an air of classic elegance. Vinyl pergola kits make pergolas possible for the masses without the need for heavy masonry or carpentry work. My cousin had two pergolas in her yard. According to my wife's description, they were elegantly placed one to each side of the yard maintaining a perfect symmetry. My cousin decided to purchase vinyl pergola kits because they were easy to build and because they promised to last for a long time without the need for regular maintenance. Wooden pergolas need periodic treatment with a stain or paint to preserve the wood and thus to maintain the structural integrity of the pergola. Columns made with masonry can loose their chinking over time, and so again maintenance is necessary. Vinyl holds up well to wind and weather. Thus, all that is left up to the homeowner is to enjoy the pergola. My cousin took an extra step to dress up her vinyl pergola kits. She had each vinyl pergola fitted with an outdoor chandelier. This chandeliers are made to handle the extremes of the outside climate, yet were designed in a way that they would still lend elegance to their surroundings. When my wife saw my cousin's yard for the first time, it was right at dusk. The lights in the chandeliers were bathing the pergolas in a warm, cozy light. The perfectly manicured yard provided a perfect backdrop for the two chandeliers hanging from their two perfectly symmetrical pergolas. The whole effect recalled a venue designed with wedding receptions in mind. Throughout the night my wife was enthralled with the beauty around her and had to keep reminding herself that she was actually in someone's backyard. Like I said when she told me about her experience, I finally understood why the bridal shower had taken place at my cousin's house. Hearing about my wife's experience with a yard dressed up with vinyl pergola kits, I got some inspiration for our yard. I don't think that I would go to quite the extreme that my cousin did, but I do think that I would like to have a vinyl pergola, one not two, in my yard. I can already see my family and I gathered under the pergola to enjoy a barbecue. It just feels right. And now I have another goal to add to my long list of goals designed to beautify my yard.
