Once you know who the suspects are, you'll need to figure out how much the suspects know about each other. As in real life, they'll have different perspectives of the same events and different knowledge bases. Here are several guidelines: · Ensure that no single suspect has enough information to solve the case. Since investigators must ferret out information, you must piecemeal the significant facts among several suspects to build the entire investigative atmosphere. THIS IS IMPORTANT: Since the murderer will be lying about certain facts, only arm that person with enough information to answer key questions from the investigators. Some people simply aren't good at lying. When I first began writing mystery parties, I would let the killer know he or she did it. It quickly became apparent that the event would meet its own untimely demise if the killer wasn't capable of answering with a straight face. Plus, by only providing facts that imply innocence, the killer can play along with others and attempt to solve the case. · Give suspects various levels of knowledge about each other. You could, for instance, have seven suspects, one of whom knows a lot about only one other suspect and little or nothing about the other suspects, and other variations of these relationships. · Make several of the relationships "surprises." For example, the person who runs the flower shop might be a long-lost sibling who was deprived of an inheritance by another suspect who runs a pest extermination company. Or, the baseball player might be the former sweetheart of the opera singer. · Identify the killer after you've worked out the suspect relationships. While you might think that earmarking the guilty party is one of the first things to do, I've discovered that, while developing the suspect relationships, I often change the individual I thought would be the perpetrator of the crime. This will also occur for you because you'll incorporate new plot twists into the mystery as you ponder how these people would know each other. Some of my best "perps" have emerged as I thought about these relationships. These types of relationships lead to innovative plot twists and to the "storylines" and "red herrings" that you'll develop later. Hidden relationships might or might not have an importance in solving the case. They will, though, give your investigators something to think about. essay writers
