Gardening is well known for being thirsty work. With all of the digging and weeding that has to be carried out in gardens and allotments up and down the country every week, there's no wonder that when all the hard work has been done, gardeners can wish for nothing nicer than to enjoy the fruits of their labour with a delicious glass or two of refreshing wine or bubbly. For the do it yourself kind of wine drinker, there are many flowers and fruits that can be fermented and made into wild and wonderful wines. Quite often though, these can be rather lethal and do more than blow away any cobwebs that may be hanging around your head from the potting shed! It's much more pleasant, to do the hard work growing the fruit and vegetables or flowers and let the professionals provide the wine. Gardening can be a solitary hobby, so it's great that there are so many annual gardening shows where like-minded gardeners can get together and share ideas around the displays while enjoying a refreshing Grenache Rose, or the odd glass or two of Pinot Grigio. Already this year, enthusiasts have seen some exciting displays of horticultural excellence at the Chelsea Flower Show. As usual, this year's show was held in the gardens of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea and in the same month is the Hampton Court Palace Show, in the gardens of Henry V's favourite palace, south of London. This show is held early in the gardening calendar and takes place in May. Often, flowers are presented at the show and photographed with their namesake when named after famous celebrities of the day and it's possible to see a Terry Wogan rose called the Togmeister after his radio 2 show, who's also well known for his love a good glass of hearty Merlot. Gardening enthusiasts further north are well catered for with the very popular Tatton Park Flower Show, held in the stately home's gardens in Cheshire during the summer months when show-goers can enjoy strawberries and a glass of chilled white Pinot Grigio in magnificent surroundings. Once into Autumn and September sees the coastal event held every year at Southport for its Flower Show when a hearty Lancashire pie stall is a good accompaniment to a Merlot with lots of jammy plum and berry flavours. God's own county of Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate hosts the annual Yorkshire Flower Show when food and flower produces meet in the hundreds to entice and delight visitors with wine and food as a backdrop to some breathtaking flower displays. For all gardeners rewarding themselves with a glass of Californian red wine or a South African white, the shows and the ability to buy wine online means they will never go short.
