The primary technological components and processes behind the modern fridge freezer has changed little over the past century. If you have ever considered how your fridge freezer keeps your food cold and fresh then you will be amazed to learn that the technological processes that have been put in place to allow for this are in actual fact quite straight forward. Refrigeration is a procedure whereby heat is eliminated from a material and its surrounding area so that the temperature of that material or area is reduced. Evaporating the fluid and turning it into gas achieves this. When a fluid disappears at a low temperature it draws in heat energy from its environment and hence causes an overall temperature fall. So that the fridge can allow this evaporation process to take place it needs to have some kind of shut cycle pattern whereby the fluid can change into gas and return to fluid again, whilst taking in or giving out heated. You may have noticed that although the inside of your refrigerator is always freezing the outside is always heated. This is because when the gas needs to condense back into a fluid again it generates unwanted excess heat. There are five primary elements of a contemporary refrigerator. These are the compressor, an expansion valve, refrigerant and heated exchanger pipes; these are located both inside and out. The compressor is the component that warms up the gas and condenses it into a fluid. The coils at the rear of your refrigerator let the gas expel unwanted heated as this procedure occurs. The fluid then moves through the expansion valve and instantly evaporates. This decreases the overall temperature of the surrounding area. The cooled gas is then pulled up through the compressor and the process starts again. The refrigerants that have been tried and tested have developed somewhat over the years. Beginning refrigerator styles used toxic gases like ammonia, sulphur dioxide and methyl chloride but unfortunately these led to a few critical injuries from leaking. Following this CFCs were introduced, which were later discovered to be damaging the Earth’s protective Ozone layer. HFCs seemed like the perfect replacement for CFCs but again these were discovered to be dangerous to the Planet's environment because HFCs are a green house gas and therefore further the effects of global warming. Although some contemporary refrigerator freezers still use HFC refrigerant many have now converted to natural solutions like propane and hydrocarbons.
