The word Guyana means Land of many waters which comes from the language of Amerindian, and originally the island was called Co-operative Republic of Guyana, the area of the island is 83,000 square miles and the key faiths on this Island are Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. Guyana is a major Rum producer in the world and also produces rice, Sugar, diamonds and gold. The clan which ruled Guyana traditionally before the Continentals arrived was called Warrau, they were on the island in the early 17th century, The island was founded by the Continentals in 1498 and there are numerous historic events in which there were battles fought and won by the Spanish, French and English to have the land these battles raged on for hundreds of years, Guyana was under Dutch control by the mid 1700s, and then the English achieved control in 1814, under UK rule lots of Africans and East Indians arrived on the island and in 1961 Guyana formed an internal self-government under Cheddi Jagen of the Races Progressive Party after the riots there in 1962 the United Kingdom stepped in to pacify there had been a coalition executive established in 1964 after elections were held this was ran by Forbes Burnham of the Races State Congress. In 1966 Guyana gained freedom from the Brit and turned into a Republic in 1970. There are large quantity of Customs in Guyana and they are all gleaned from the abundant cultures on the island many of them are Phagwah which is held in May it is a Hindu vacation and is a celebration of good over evil, the people celebrating, in which people wear white and throw scents, water and powder over friends and locals and family, another party is Mashramani, which is celebrated in February to mark the time when the island turned into a republic, it is a colorful party and there are bands which play and street shows held for it, there are even fancy dress competitions for the festival.
