Many new freelance writers feel overwhelmed. There's so much information on the web -- from what freelance writing rates should be, to where to find online writing jobs, to how to put together a proposal, etc. -- it can make your head spin. So, if you're a new to this profession, how can you cut to the chase? It's actually quite simple. Find an online "mentor" to guide you to success. But, you may be thinking, "How do I find a freelance writing mentor?" Well, the reason mentor is in quotation marks above is that you're probably not going to find an experienced freelancer to give you personal coaching. But, you can find a source that you go to find answers for your most pressing freelance writing questions, eg, the blog of an experienced freelance writer. The Best Way to Find a Mentor Let me explain how and why this is the best route to take. In this day and age, most of us suffer from information overload. This is particularly true for those of us who spend a lot of time online - eg, freelance writers, bloggers and internet marketers. You can get so caught up in reading different sources that you waste huge chunks of time - time that should be spent marketing for freelance writing jobs. To counter this, have a "go-to" source (ie, blog, website, newsletter) for the information you need. Most blogs and websites have search boxes. Use these by typing in the keyword phrase of the information you're interested in and wading through the results. This is a much better use of your time because it gives you a centralized starting point to start your research. Only if you can't find the information on your "mentor's" site should you look for other sources. How to Find a Trustworthy, Online Freelance Writing Mentor Start by setting up a few guidelines. Following are some you can start with. The next time you have a question, before you start to aimlessly surf the net, stop and ask yourself: do I know of a site/blog that: (i) is written by an expert on freelance writing; (ii) does this person have an identifiable track record; and (iii) do I trust the information they dispense. When You Freelance as a Writer, Time is Money This will save you invaluable time. And, as time is money in freelance writing, it it'll make you more productive.
