Every character in a mystery story has a purpose. The victim dies, the killer kills, and the detective solves the crime. Each one helps move the plot along. But there is another character the mystery writer can use to move the story along. That character is the catalyst. A catalyst is a character who brings about change in a mystery story. He helps move the plot along, provides clues, or even hinders the investigation. He is probably the most versatile character you will use in your mystery. How you use a catalyst character is completely up to you. He is not confined in a set-in-stone manner of use. He can be young or old, rich or poor, it does not matter. But there are a few things you should consider when creating this character. What is the character's main role in your story? Is this character going to help or hinder the story? He can do either or both. When planning his role, think about what you want him to accomplish and how he will do it. You want his role to make sense, and work with both the main plot and any subplots. Who is the catalyst associated with? Is he acquainted with the victim, killer, or detective? Who he is associated with will help you decide what he will do to move the plot along. You can have him associated with more than one character, but make sure those associations make sense to the reader. What is the catalyst's motive? Why is he helping or hindering the investigation? You need a clear reason why he does what he does, even if you do not tell the reader that reason until the very end of the story. A great motive will make all the difference to a reader, especially if the catalyst is helping the killer. What does the catalyst bring to the story? Other than information, does the catalyst bring any resources to the story? This could be anything from money to emotional support. It is okay for the catalyst to only bring information, but having another role in the story would go a long way to making him more real and believable. A catalyst can be a crucial member of your story's cast. He is a mover and shaker, and will help keep your story's plot going in the right direction.
