The Alpine resort of Val Thorens is one of Europe’s most popular. It was purpose built as the third and highest of the Three Valley villages. The Three Valley ski area is the biggest ski area in the world and it is comprised of Courcheval, famous for its glitz and glamour, Meribel, known for its great après ski and adventurous runs and Val Thorens, with its wonderful snow conditions. Located at over 2000m the latter can guarantee snow all season right into resort. Because this resort is purpose built it was meticulously planned. It was built in a bowl with all the ski runs fanning out from the centre. If you are clever you can follow the sun and ski in the glorious sunshine all day as it moves around the mountain. The village is compact and you can ski to and from your door, regardless of where you are staying. There has been a real effort made to create a village heart and atmosphere here, and there are some tasty local restaurants and a lively après ski scene with bars to suit everyone. Many people choose this resort because of its accessibility. It is close to many of the airports served by the UK. Geneva is perhaps the most popular choice and to drive from Geneva to Val Thorens takes less than two hours. Superb Skiing It is hard to believe that in such a short time you can travel from Geneva to Val Thorens and be conquering some of the best pistes in the world. There is such a diversity of runs in this area and there is something to entertain every level. Despite it being part of the incredible Three Valley ski area, it is easy to spend a week exploring the surrounding region of this resort alone. There are many opportunities for the intermediate skiers to make huge improvements on the endless number of reds and blues here, and, if you are an experienced skier or snowboarder, the Chaviere and Peclet glaciers have exciting off-piste locations to discover. The resort also has much to offer the technical skier, with some very challenging mogul fields on the Cime de Caron and La Masse, a little further down the valley. It can get busy on weekends with people travelling from Geneva to Val Thorens for a weekend’s skiing, but the area can easily accommodate the number of visitors. This resort is all about the skiing and the snow but when you are done on the slopes for the day there are lots of other activities to get involved in. Tennis, squash and swimming are very popular and the facilities are excellent. Maybe you would like to go skidoo riding, or even head out with one of the piste bashers for an evening grooming the pistes. Dogsledding and snowshoeing are also great fun and make for a memorable experience.
