The next time you have a writing deadline, try using a non-schedule to outline a realistic writing plan. A non-schedule is another name for a weekly calendar that accounts for all your non-writing time. When you make a writing non-schedule, you consider not only your timed commitments at work and home, but also your un-timed activities such as meals, exercise, errands, laundry, family time and the like. Un like a list or a marketing plan you make on a weekly basis, non-scheduling is an outline of the time you spend doing other things besides writing. Where do you squeeze in your writing? It has been said that if you only have fifteen minutes a day take it. This may be good advice but now you have the pressure of where to fit those fifteen minutes in. This can cause huge procrastination problems. Here is a sample of a un-schedule. You have a job and you are gone eight to ten hours a day. Your commute time is two hours a day. You come home to cook dinner, get the kids to bed which takes about three hours. By 9 p.m. you are pooped out and cannot think of one single word to write. You have already spent fifteen or sixteen hours and you haven't even slept yet. You sleep for eight hours. Oh OK maybe six. Unless you can write in your sleep your dreams are the only thing you will have the next day. Where is that 15 minutes? OK this may be a little extreme but not by much. Make your non schedule and take a look at the blank spaces. These represent the maximum number of hours that you could potentially spend writing. By starting with these blank spaces as a guide, you will be able to more accurately predict how much time you have to write on any given day. For instance, you may discover that you don't have five hours to spend writing the night before a deadline. By planning accordingly, you will not only get a better night's sleep, you may also end up with a superb article. The non-schedule might also be a good way to get started on a larger writing project, such as a novel or picture book. You may think you have weeks or months to get a writing project done, but if you sit down and map out how much time you have available to write on a daily and weekly basis, you will see you need to get started sooner, rather than later. In addition, this type of un-scheduling may reveal busy weeks or months, which will help you budget time for long-term projects. Be sure to write your writing time in the blank spaces on your non-schedule calendar. Seeing your success on paper will help reinforce productive behavior and help to kick the procrastination habit. resume
